Week of September 21 · one-hour session

Setting night

Monday and Thursday this week we train setting: three drills, then Queen & King of the Court. All levels welcome.

Sessions

Monday, September 21
Thursday, September 24

Time

6:30 – 7:30 pm

Where

Sports Challenge America (Elevate), 28120 Race Track Road, Bonita Springs

0:00 – 0:05

Skill explanation

The set is what makes an attack hittable. Tonight we work square shoulders before the ball arrives, a clean contact above the forehead, and consistent location — plus the bump set you fall back on when you are out of system.

  • Get square to target before the ball arrives
  • Contact above the forehead, both hands releasing together
  • Set off the net so your partner can swing through
  • Bump set when you are late — location beats style

    Hand-Set Mechanics + Contrasts

Beginner · 1 ball per athlete, Wall or net pole as target

Why: Build the legal beach hand-set: clean, simultaneous contact with no spin.

    • Progression: chest pass (2 min) → toss-catch-push (3 min) → continuous self-set into wall (5 min) → 2 quick contrasts: palms-only vs fingers-only, then Superman finish (full extension hold). Coach watches hand shape, contact, release.
    • Coach emphasis: Forehead window — see the ball through the triangle of your hands at contact.

    Triangle Hand Setting

Intermediate · Cart of balls, Cones or target markers, Full court or half court as needed

Why: Train setting through triangle hand setting with a clear rep structure and game-like feedback.

    • Same as bump-set Triangle but P3 HAND-SETS to P1. 10 reps, rotate. Both sides of the court.
    • Coach emphasis: Arrive balanced, square to target, and make the set hittable before adding speed.

    Dig to Set Transition

Intermediate · 1 ball per pair, Cone target

Why: Convert defense into offense — the dig-to-set is the most missed transition in junior beach.

    • Coach attacks → defender digs → setter sets → defender attacks. Continuous for 90 seconds, then switch. 4 rounds.
    • Coach emphasis: After your dig, immediately move to be the hitter. The setter is already moving to set.

Queen & King of the Court

Every session ends the same way: continuous Queen & King of the Court. Challengers serve in, winners hold the King/Queen side, losers rotate off. Competitive reps that put the night's skill under real pressure.

    • Challenger side serves; winner of the rally moves toward the King/Queen side
    • Lose on the King/Queen side and you rotate off to the back of the challenger line
    • Points only count when you win on the King/Queen side
    • Play until time — highest score wins the night
