Serving night

Monday and Thursday this week we train serving: three drills, then Queen & King of the Court. All levels welcome.

Sessions

Monday, September 28
Thursday, October 1

Time

6:30 – 7:30 pm

Where

Sports Challenge America (Elevate), 28120 Race Track Road, Bonita Springs

0:00 – 0:05

Skill explanation

Serving is the one contact nobody can take from you. Tonight is toss consistency first, then a repeatable float, then placement — seams, short, and into the wind.

  • Same toss every time; everything follows from it
  • Flat contact, firm wrist, no follow-through on the float
  • Serve the seam or the weaker passer, not the middle
  • Never miss two in a row

No warm-up — we start on the ball. Three drills, fifteen minutes each, then we compete.

    Serving — coach explanation

Serving is the one contact nobody can take from you. Tonight is toss consistency first, then a repeatable float, then placement — seams, short, and into the wind.

    Serving Fundamentals

Intermediate · 6 balls per court, Cones marking 20 ft serve line and full distance

Why: Install a repeatable pre-serve routine and build control before power.

    • Each athlete serves 8 balls, shags, then back of the line. Underhand allowed for true beginners. Routine must be visible on every serve.
    • Coach emphasis: Same routine every serve — control before power.

    Deep Rainbow Serves

Intermediate · Cart of balls, Beach chairs OR live defenders

Why: Practice the deep rainbow (high-arc deep) serve — land it past the back line passers without going out.

    • Server must land the serve behind the chairs/line and inside the court without touching the chairs. With defenders: they try to touch any served ball; server's job is to beat them deep without going out.
    • Coach emphasis: High arc, deep contact zone. Risk vs reward — serve aggressive but in.

    Serving Variety Challenge

Intermediate · Cart of balls, Full court with service zones

Why: This drill develops the ability of an athlete to place a variety of serves accurately.

    • Areas of the court are marked out in the sand. (this can be done with cones for extra visibility) The areas are then numbered and the server tries to serve into these areas at the coaches' discretion or in order from 1 - 5. With more than one athlete this can be turned into a competition where the first athlete to get all round once or twice wins. 1
    • Coach emphasis: Keep serving reps game-like and technically clean.

Queen & King of the Court

Every session ends the same way: continuous Queen & King of the Court. Challengers serve in, winners hold the King/Queen side, losers rotate off. Competitive reps that put the night's skill under real pressure.

    • Challenger side serves; winner of the rally moves toward the King/Queen side
    • Lose on the King/Queen side and you rotate off to the back of the challenger line
    • Points only count when you win on the King/Queen side
    • Play until time — highest score wins the night
