Hand-Setting Mechanics Progression with Contrasts

Build a clean, repeatable hand-set through deliberate contrast drills that isolate each fault.

How to run it

  1. 1

Run the progression in order: (1) Cheeseburger — exaggerated wide hands, ball squishes. (2) Pirate Legs — one knee down, weight shift forward through contact. (3) Elevator — set straight up, catch, repeat, focus on legs. (4) Palms-Only — no fingers, forces deep ball position. (5) Fingers-Only — no palms, isolates wrist snap. (6) Superman Finish — full extension after release, hands track the ball.

  2. 2

Coach emphasis: Each contrast exposes a different fault. Don't rush — let athletes feel the difference.

Why we run it

Build a clean, repeatable hand-set through deliberate contrast drills that isolate each fault.

Many of our drills are adapted from the coaching resources at Better at Beach and the FIVB.
