Week of November 2 · one-hour session

Serving night

Monday and Thursday this week we train serving: three drills, then Queen & King of the Court. All levels welcome.

Sessions

Monday, November 2
Thursday, November 5

Time

6:30 – 7:30 pm

Where

Sports Challenge America (Elevate), 28120 Race Track Road, Bonita Springs

0:00 – 0:05

Skill explanation

Serving is the one contact nobody can take from you. Tonight is toss consistency first, then a repeatable float, then placement — seams, short, and into the wind.

  • Same toss every time; everything follows from it
  • Flat contact, firm wrist, no follow-through on the float
  • Serve the seam or the weaker passer, not the middle
  • Never miss two in a row

    Serve + First-Ball Control

Intermediate · 6 balls per court, Cone target at setter spot on each side

Why: Connect serve with immediate transition to defensive ready — no admiring the serve.

    • Server serves, then transitions to defender ready. Passer reads, calls, passes to target. Both contacts scored: serve in (1 pt) + pass to target (1 pt).
    • Coach emphasis: Finish your serve, then become a player — no watching.

    Split the Passers

Intermediate · Cart of balls, Full court with service zones

Why: This drill works on developing a serve that splits the passers down the middle (often referred to as the 'husband and wife' serve)

    • Using the wind the server attempts to serve at the inside shoulder of a passer with the intention of using the wind to draw the ball back to the other passer and cause confusion. If the score is tight and the passers are hesitant this serve can often result in a valuable point. This could be turned into a game where the server plays against the passers - just make sure the passers do not both move into the middle of the court to make a ace down the middle near impossible. Athletes are likely to be most effective when using this strategy with the float serve (as it moves more in the wind) but a topspin serve can also be utilized to create confusion down the middle of the court. Serve + Free Ball Run-Throughs

Intermediate · Cart of balls, Cones or target markers, Full court or half court as needed

Why: Train serving through serve + free ball run-throughs with a clear rep structure and game-like feedback.

    • Split athletes evenly across both sides. Serves come from one side only. Each passer gets 1 serve + 1 free ball from coach. Free ball is placed to force a run-through / run-to. Repeat on both sides of the court.
    • Coach emphasis: Serve with intent, target the stated zone, and measure the pass quality that follows.

Queen & King of the Court

Every session ends the same way: continuous Queen & King of the Court. Challengers serve in, winners hold the King/Queen side, losers rotate off. Competitive reps that put the night's skill under real pressure.

    • Challenger side serves; winner of the rally moves toward the King/Queen side
    • Lose on the King/Queen side and you rotate off to the back of the challenger line
    • Points only count when you win on the King/Queen side
    • Play until time — highest score wins the night
